A microtonal approach to the sonification of the six-by-six magic square.
Each square is treated with three different tuning systems triggered simultaneously by the same note on the keyboard. Ex: The number 1 = note 62 [D], 2 = note 63 [Eb], 3 = note 64 [E]. . . 36 = note 97 [Db]
The microtunings are inspired by the unique mathematics of the square.
•36edo [33.33333 cents/semitone] because there are 36 squares
•111ed111 [73.45314 cents/semitone] because every row, column, and diagonal has the same sum: 111
•666ed666 [16.89978 cents/semitone] because the sum of the first 36 integers is 666.

Scripts for these tunings were created with AE’s Music Maker Calculator and Sevish’s Scale Workshop. They were imported into Native Instruments Kontakt VST within Steinberg’s Cubase.
